So I got a package from mom today.. contains a book, Rolling Stone, some mail.. and in that mail was a speeding ticket! Turns out the one weekend I had a car I was filmed doing 93 in an 80km/h zone. Damn. Of course it was around 9 in the morning which means it was when I was speeding through Amsterdam trying to get to the Hilton so I could take my CISSP. Better to get a ticket then be late.. 34 Euro vs 450 Euro.. It’s odd that it tool over 2 months to get to me, but I guess since it went to the rental car company first, then to my old place in DC then to WA then to me.. that make some sense. Besides paying the fine, I don’t think there are any long term effects. I don’t have a Dutch license and I don’t think they have a point system, or even report back to your US drivers license.. at least not that I am aware of. A buddy of mine got 3 of these in one day, one after another.. minutes apart. Not all of the speed cameras have these big bright flashes.. sucks in that regard, the good side is that they don’t blind you. and make you crash into things.
One cool thing about Holland is that they have the euro-acceptgiro forms on all the bills they send. It makes for a simple way to pay the bill without needing to write checks or stamps. Just fill in the blanks and then you drop it off at the bank and the bank will transfer the money from your account to the account of the person giving you the bill, since in most cases they have Postbank accounts. Or you can pay it on-line from your bank account.. e-bay is included in almost all accounts. Neat system really.
Actually, come to think of it, They don’t actually provide any proof per se, so I suppose i could blow it off and not pay and see how long that lasts. Of course the downside being that they (the Dutch) could get upset and decide they don’t like me here. Probably not worth the 40+ dollars, eh?
