I think all that talk about a new laptop pissed off my MBP. Yesterday afternoon I went to do some work on it and it seemed locked up. I rebooted it and it wouldn’t get past the login section and after about 3 hours of playing with it trying to get it to finish a login, I decided that something had gone wrong with the OS install and figured I’ld just wipe it out. But first there was the matter of backing up the data (since I don’t have a good plan in place). Humm...
Turns out that if you boot a mac into FireWire mode (”F” at boot) and then plug the mac into a linux box, you have no problems reading the disk and you’re able to copy everything right off. I did trying booting from a Knoppix 5 DVD and attaching the drive directly, but that didn’t seem to work well.
Anyways, I was able to get all my data, reinstall and patch the OS and copy it back over and new the laptop is happy. Painless really.. it helps to have a good sized desk and extra drives.
See, you need to show love to all your computers, or one of them will get pissy and give you problems. Computers are smart like that.
